Anna Blinkova endured a miserable Cincinnati Open as she was thrashed 6-1 6-2 by Kimberly Birrell in the first-round. The Russian has five defeats from her last six matches and has not won consecutive matches since making the quarter-finals of the Eastbourne Open two months ago. She is currently ranked 77 in the world.
Elise Mertens lost a tight match against Elena Rybakina in the third-round of Cincinnati last time out. She took the first set and pushed the former Wimbledon champion all the way in the decider, only to be broken right at the death. There were still positive signs for the Belgian after a disappointing early exit in Montreal a week earlier.
Mertens already has a hard court title on the WTA Tour this season in Singapore and we really like her chances here against Blinkova, who is coming off the back off a very poor performance and defeat.
