Ann Li’s time in Montreal was short-lived, as she lost to Anna Kalinskaya in the first-round despite achieving a bagel in the second set. Li lost 7-6 0-6 6-3, and was rather unfortunate to run into the Russian early in the event considering Kalinskaya had made the final of the Washington Open just a few days earlier. Nevertheless, she does have a recent quarter-final appearance after her exploits in Prague during late July. Li made the final of the Singapore Open in February, her best result of the season by far.

Li has enjoyed the better season of the pair and is ranked over 45 places above her opponent. She also won the previous meeting between the two, the final of the BBVA Open Internacional de Valencia, in straight sets, to claim her first ever title on the WTA Tour.
