Ann Li held her nerve to squeeze past Camila Osorio in the first-round of the Australian Open. The American served for the match at 6-5 in the second set, but Osorio broke back and levelled the match in the tiebreak. Li squandered yet another opportunity to close the match out in the third set but won the match as Osorio was broken when serving to stay in it. Li won 6-4 6-7 (5) 7-5 after two hours and 32 minutes.

Magda Linette is her next opponent. Linette produced a fine victory in round one as she came from a set down to knock 15th seed Emma Navarro out of the tournament. She lost the first set but was not broken after that, winning 3-6 6-3 6-3. This continues an encouraging run of form for the Pole, as she made back-to-back quarter-finals in Auckland and Hobart in the lead up to the major.

Linette is performing well and will fancy her chances against Li, who seemed shaky at points in her first-round match.
