Ann Li made a winning start in Cleveland as she defeated Yuliia Starodubtseva in her first-round match. The Ukrainian made the stronger start of the two and served for the first set at 5-4, but Li reeled off three straight games to take a crucial lead. She broke on two more occasions in the second set to win 7-5 6-3. Li created plenty of openings on her opponent’s serve with 14 break point opportunities overall.
Iva Jovic continued her momentum as she beat Anastasia Potapova, ranked 43 places above her in the world rankings, in the first-round. The 17-year-old raced into a 3-0 lead in the first set but was pegged back by Potapova. Nevertheless, Jovic broke the Russian when she was serving to stay in the set and recovered from a break down in the second to win 7-5 6-3. Jovic had reached the third-round of a Masters event for the first time in Cincinnati last week and will eye a deep run here ahead of the US Open.
Li is likely to be a tougher test for Jovic and there is very little to separate the two Americans here.
