Ann Li made an encouraging start to her US Open campaign, as she beat Antonia Ruzic in the first-round. After a competitive opening set, the American took increasing control and dropped just one game in the second as she won 7-5 6-1 after an hour and 32 minutes. That continued a productive spell on hard courts for Li, who reached the Monterrey Open semi-finals immediately before travelling to New York, which included comfortable wins over Camila Osorio and Alycia Parks.

She faces Donna Vekic in the next round. Vekic had to work considerably harder for her place in round two as she beat Talia Gibson in three sets. The Croatian looked in command at a set and 4-1 ahead but Gibson reeled off five games in a row to level the match. Vekic recovered in the decider and saved several important break points, winning 6-2 4-6 6-3. That win ended a five-match losing streak for Vekic, who hadn’t won a match since her run to the title at Queen’s Club.

Li enters this encounter with the stronger form, and Vekic was inconsistent at times in her opening match.
