Andrey Rublev vs Taylor Fritz prediction
Andrey Rublev advanced to the last eight of the Canadian Open after his opponent Alejandro Davidovich Fokina retired at the beginning of the deciding set. The Spaniard edged a close first set but Rublev hit back to level the match up in the second set tiebreak. There were no break of serve in the first two sets but Rublev finally made the breakthrough and went 3-0 up before Davidovich Fokina decided to call it quits. The Russian has struggled for form this season but is into the last eight of a Masters for the first time this year.
He will face Taylor Fritz as he edged past Jiri Lehecka 7-6 6-7 7-6. There were no breaks of serve during the whole match, though both players failed to convert a combined 14 break points in total. Fritz produced a very strong serving display as he crashed down 16 aces and held his nerve during the deciding set tiebreak.
The head-to-head is 5-4 in Fritz’s favour and he leads 3-1 on hard court, though Rublev did win their last contest in the semi-finals of the Madrid Open last year. Both players are very few chinks in their armour right now and this is likely to be determined by fine margins. Fritz should be able to win enough free points on serve to stay ahead and book his place in the last four.
