Andrey Rublev came from a set down to beat Lorenzo Sonego and book his place in the last-16 of the Canadian Open. It was a solid performance from the Russian, who won 88% of his first serve points. He responded well to going behind in the match, winning 5-7 6-4 6-3.
He now faces Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The Spaniard continued his strong form with an impressive straight sets win over Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik. Mensik produced a flat and error-strewn performance but that shouldn’t take anything away from Davidovich Fokina, who has made a very strong start in Toronto after his run to the final of the Washington Open last week.
Rublev dominates the head-to-head, leading 5-1 and 2-0 on hard courts. However, Davidovich Fokina did finally post a win against the Russian in their last encounter, defeating Rublev in straight sets earlier this year in Barcelona.
