It’s been a really difficult few days off the court for Jessica Pegula. She recently posted on her social media platforms, announcing the untimely passing of her beloved dog ‘Tucker’ and how much the labrador meant to her. Any owner of a dog will tell you how hard it is when they pass away and it will be a challenge mentally for USA star Pegula to put her understandable grief to the back of her mind going into a huge Grand Slam tournament.

Recent results haven’t shaken off any concerns for Pegula heading into the competition. She was eliminated in the round of 32 in both the Madrid and Italian Open, not to mention the 31-year-old is coming off the back of losing her only game played in Strasbourg a few days prior to Roland-Garros.

But Pegula is strong-willed and a fighter. Not to mention a fantastic player and it would be no surprise to see her come good here. She’s been handed a relatively kind first round draw on paper against the inexperienced Anca Todoni, who failed to get through the qualifiers at Indian Wells, Madrid and Rome. A straight sets win for Pegula is well worth backing.
