Anastasija Sevastova went through to the second-round of the Cincinnati Open after a three set victory over Emina Bektas. The 35-year-old squandered a chance to wrap it up in two as she was unable to convert a match point in the second set tiebreak. Nevertheless, Sevastova responded superbly as she broke at the start of the third and raced ahead to win 6-4 6-7 6-1.
Ashlyn Krueger will be her opponent in round two. The American suffered an early exit in the Canadian Open as she was defeated 6-4 6-4 by Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain. Her record as of late has not been particularly inspiring, with her best run of form coming during the earlier part of the season.
