Anastasia Zakharova produced a fine comeback in round one as she recovered from going a set and a break down to beat Kimberly Birrell. Zakharova looked to be heading out of the tournament as Birrell established a 3-0 lead in the second set after winning the first, but the world number 100 reeled off five straight games in a row on her way to levelling up the match. She then broke the Australian’s serve on three occasions in the decider to win 5-7 6-4 6-3.
She will face Hailey Baptiste after she defeated Elena-Gabriela Ruse. The American took the first set with ease and seemed to be in command in the second as she raced to a 4-1 lead. However, the Romanian broke back to draw level at 4-4 with the set going to a tiebreak. Baptiste won six points in a row in the breaker to seal a 6-2 7-6 win after an hour and 33 minutes. The world number 49 was broken just once and won 76% of her points on second serve.
Baptiste performed well in the first-round and should have too much for Zakharova if she can repeat that display here.
