Anastasia Zakharova makes her first ever appearance in the main draw at the US Open after reaching the second round at Wimbledon, she will have some confidence and motivation to get through at least a round in New York.

The 23-year-old Russian got the semi-finals in Tennis in the Land last week before losing to Sorana Cirstea and that too will give her good confidence coming into this one.

She has been handed a favourable draw as she comes up against Elina Avanesyan in the first round. Her 22-year-old opponent may be younger but she has far more experience than Zakharova with this being her fourth appearance in the main draw at the US Open.

Her best performances have come on clay however while it is Zakharova who the better player on hard courts and has the greater momentum behind her. There is little to choose between the two players here but we just favour Zakharova coming into this one.
