Defending champion Anastasia Potapova is out to win the title in Cluj-Napoca for the second time in a row. She produced a strong level in Melbourne as she defeated Suzan Lamens and Emma Raducanu to make the third-round. She fought well against world number one Aryna Sabalenka, losing in two close tiebreaks.
She goes up against Lucia Bronzetti in the first-round, a rematch of last year’s final. Bronzetti aimed to qualify for the Australian Open but lost in the final stage to former major champion Sloane Stephens. The Italian is ranked 110 in the world.
Potapova won the final in three sets last year, overcoming a slow start to win 4-6 6-1 6-2. This extended her unbeaten run against Bronzetti and she now leads 5-0 in the head-to-head. Her level at the Australian Open was encouraging and she could make another deep run at the tournament if she maintains that form.
