Anastasia Potapova got the defence of her title off to a winning start but had to come back from the brink to beat Lucia Bronzetti. This was a rematch of last year’s final, with Bronzetti also taking the first set on this occasion. She then went 3-1 up in the second and looked on course for a first win against Potapova. However, the 24-year-old broke twice in quick succession to flip the match on its head. A dramatic decider saw Potapova establish a 4-2 lead, only for Bronzetti to wrestle back the advantage and serve for the match. Potapova broke back to stay in the tournament and powered through to win 5-7 6-4 7-5 after two hours and 43 minutes.
She goes up against Anastasia Zakharova next. The Mexican recorded an impressive win as she came from a set down to beat former world number one Karolina Pliskova. The Czech had got through to the third-round of the Australian Open and made a strong start, but Zakharova largely dominated the next two sets to win 4-6 6-2 6-2.
Potapova showed a lot of fighting qualities in her previous match and the same will be required against Zakharova.
