Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is currently on a three match losing streak after early losses in Montreal and Cincinnati to Eva Lys and Aoi Ito. She has not had a particularly impressive season on the tour overall but stellar runs at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, where she made the quarter-finals in both, have kept her inside the top 50 of the world rankings. She now returns to a tournament which she has won on four separate occasions, with the first coming all the way back in 2010.

Antonia Ruzic is her first-round opponent after she won both of her matches in qualifying. She is currently ranked 89 in the world. She has a couple of ITF Tour titles this season and did make the semi-finals of the Bastad Open, but she has just two main draw hard court victories on the WTA Tour all year.

Pavlyuchenkova will hope to get some wins under her belt ahead of the US Open at an event that has served her well over the years. She will be the favourite against Ruzic and is expected to advance.
