Alycia Parks continued her run in Monterrey and reached her first semi-final since January after beating Rebecca Sramkova. Parks had defeated top seed Emma Navarro in the previous round and picked up from where she left off in the first set as she dominated the exchanges and raced to a 5-0 lead. She broke at the start of the second to continue the momentum but was broken when serving for the match at 5-4. Nevertheless, she responded brilliantly by breaking in the very next service game and closing it out at the second attempt to win 6-2 7-5.
She will now face Diana Shnaider after she came through a dramatic contest with Elise Mertens. Shnaider trailed the Belgian after the first set and crucially saved a break point at 5-5 in the second, before levelling the match in a close tiebreak. The Russian looked to be down and out in the decider as Mertens raced to a 5-1 lead. Remarkably, Shnaider saved three match points at 0-40 down to break the Mertens serve and did so again as the Belgian failed to close out the match on two occasions. Shnaider raced clear in the tiebreak to win a scarcely believable match 3-6 7-6 7-6.
Shnaider showed such fighting qualities in that encounter, and she’ll be a commanding favourite to beat Parks.
