Alycia Parks overcame a scare to beat Victoria Jimenez Kasinsteva in Toronto and book her place in the second-round of the Canadian Open. She looked on course for a convincing win as she opened up a 5-1 lead in the second set after taking the lead. However, she was broken on serve twice when attempting to close out the match. Nevertheless, Parks would break again to seal a 6-4 6-4 victory after an hour and 30 minutes.
She now faces Alexandra Eala in the next round. Eala heads into this event on the back of the biggest title of her career at the Washington Open. The 21-year-old beat top seed Jessica Pegula in a rain-interrupted final which spanned two days. She also defeated Leylah Fernandez, Naomi Osaka and Elina Svitolina. The Filipino is now inside the world’s top 20 for the first time in her career.
Parks does actually lead the head-to-head after coming from a set down to beat Eala at this year’s Australian Open. The only concern for Eala is the quick turnaround after her triumph in Washington, but she’s still a clear favourite.
