Alina Korneeva is through to the next stage in Toronto after her opponent Polina Kudermetova retired in the second set of their first-round match. The Russian was leading 6-0 3-0. The 19-year-old won her first WTA 125 title at the Oeiras Indoors in February, while she also advanced to the semi-finals of the Hellenic Championships in Athens just last month.
Her next opponent is Emma Navarro. The American received a bye in the first-round. Navarro struggled at the start of the year, losing nine of her first 13 matches, and decided to take some time off during the spring. Her form improved significantly after her return, and she defeated Victoria Mboko in the final of the Strasbourg Open to secure her second WTA Tour title. She went close to a third as she also got through to the final in Nottingham on grass, but lost out to Marie Bouzkova.
Navarro reached the semi-finals of this event two years ago, and she will be expected to come out on top here.
