Alina Korneeva continued her fine form as she defeated Iva Jovic in straight sets to reach the round-of-16 at a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career. The teenager, who beat Emma Navarro in the second round, converted seven of her eight break points as she won 6-3 6-4. Korneeva had advanced to her second tour-level semi-final at the Hellenic Championships in Athens last month.
She will have a tough task in the next stage of the event as she faces two-time Grand Slam singles champion Coco Gauff. The 22-year-old overcame a slight wobble towards the end of the second set to win 6-1 6-4 against Maria Sakkari after one hour and 16 minutes. Gauff is still searching for her first title of the campaign.
Korneeva has performed strongly over the past few weeks, and her fearless approach could trouble Gauff at times. Nevertheless, the American is still a commanding favourite to get through.
