Aliaksandra Sasnovich produced a sensational comeback to knock four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka out of the China Open in the second-round. Osaka was playing her first match since reaching the semi-finals of the US Open and was in control as she broke at 2-2 in the second set to go a set and a break up. However, Sasnovich’s level suddenly increased as the Japanese struggled on serve, with Sasnovich winning 1-6 6-4 6-2. She has now won back-to-back tour level matches for the first time since February.
Marta Kostyuk is her opponent in round three. She made a very strong start in Beijing as she demolished Ella Seidel 6-1 6-1. Kostyuk wasn’t broken on serve and won the first five service games as she wrapped up a dominant win after an hour and one minute.
Sasnovich will take a lot of confidence from her victory, but Kostyuk has six wins from her last seven matches and will be a clear favourite to advance.
