The Aussie’s greater consistency means he is now up to a career high of 19 in the rankings ahead of a first round clash with qualifier Martin Landaluce.

The Spanish underdog completed his third, final-set victory (including qualifiers) at this tournament with a 3-6 6-3 6-2 win over the USA’s Patrick Kypson.

It was the 19-year-old’s first tour-level win of the year, but the world number 142 is likely to find the going tough against the big-hitting Popyrin.

It should be straight forward for the buoyant Aussie, who will probably seal this in two.
