Alexei Popyrin vs Jannik Sinner prediction
Alexei Popyrin snapped a 10-match losing streak in the first-round of the Qatar Open as he defeated Mubarak Shannan Zayid in straight sets. The wildcard was no match for Popyrin, who won 6-0 6-2 after just 58 minutes.
He will now face world number two Jannik Sinner. The Italian marked his return with an impressive straight sets victory over Tomas Machac. Sinner had not competed since his semi-final loss at the Australian Open, but he was in formidable form here as he did not concede a break point and won 86% of his first serve points. Machac had already won a title in Adelaide this season, but he was under pressure from the off, with the four-time Grand Slam champion winning 6-1 6-4.
The head-to-head is 1-1 between the pair but Sinner was just 19 years old when they first played each other in 2021. The Italian’s victory over Popyrin in the second-round of last year’s US Open began his long stretch of defeats, and Sinner is the overwhelming favourite again here.
