It’s been tough going for Alexei Popyrin in recent times, as his ranking has now dropped to just inside the top 50 in the world and he is on a three match losing streak. After an extended break following the US Open, the Australian made his return in Stockholm but lost in round one to Sebastian Korda despite taking the first set. He then competed in Vienna but could not find a way past Matteo Berrettini, with the 2021 Wimbledon finalist winning in straight sets.
He goes up against Alexander Bublik in round one. After a slight dip, Bublik returned to form in Vienna as he got through to the quarters but his journey would end there after a straight sets loss to world number two Jannik Sinner. It’s still been an incredible season for the Kazakhstani, who reached a Grand Slam quarter-final for the first time at Roland Garros and won four ATP titles.
Popyrin will take confidence from his positive head-to-head record as he leads 2-1 and 1-0 on indoor hard court. However, Bublik won their most recent match earlier this year in Madrid. This could be a tight first-round encounter but Bublik is difficult to beat in these conditions and should be viewed as a slight favourite.
