Alexandre Muller edged a tight deciding set with Jan-Lennard Struff to advance to the next round of the Hellenic Championship in Athens. Muller took the first set comfortably, but Struff hit back with two breaks in the second to level the match. The Frenchman broke at the start of the third and served for the match at 5-4, only for Struff to break back. The set went to a tiebreak and the German raced to a 4-0 lead, but Muller came back to win eight of the next 10 points and seal a dramatic 6-3 2-6 7-6 (6) win.
He faces Tomas Martin Etcheverry next. He also came through a close match against Mackenzie McDonald. McDonald took the lead after the first tiebreak, but Etcheverry won the second in another breaker. The Argentine would break at the start of the third to go 3-0 up, eventually winning 6-7 (5) 7-6 (3) 6-3 after two hours and 50 minutes. Etcheverry served superbly, hammering 19 aces and having a first serve percentage of 79%.
If he serves similarly against Muller, he will give himself a strong chance. Nevertheless, Muller’s recent performances, which include an encouraging display against Felix Auger-Aliassime in Paris last week, have been very positive and he has enough ability to get past Etcheverry here.
