Alexandra Eala was thoroughly dominant in the first-round as she thrashed Lucia Bronzetti 6-0 6-1. The 20-year-old did not even give up a break point as she wrapped up one of her easiest wins of the season so far.

She will likely have it far tougher in the next stage as she faces Jelena Ostapenko. The 2021 champion had not featured on the tour since the French Open but got off to a winning start on grass as she beat Great Britain’s Sonay Kartal 6-3 7-6. The Latvian made a blistering start to the match, racing to a 5-0 lead in the first set and held off a Kartal fightback in the second to seal a victory in straight sets.

Eala leads the head-to-head 1-0 after beating Ostapenko earlier this year in the second-round of the Miami Open on her way to the semi-final. The Filipino seems to have raised her level after a poor run of form on the clay and make ask questions of Ostapenko.

Nevertheless, Ostapenko has a strong record at Eastbourne and should find a way to get through.
