Alexandra Eala extended her winning run to seven matches in Toronto as she reached the round-of-16 at the Canadian Open, before she ran out of steam against Belinda Bencic. The Filipino won the Washington Open right at the start of this month and moved into the top 20 of the world rankings for the first time. She will be hoping for another deep run before the start of the US Open at the end of this month.
She received a bye in round one and now faces Elena-Gabriela Ruse. The Romanian won her first-round match in Toronto after a straight sets win over Peyton Stearns but then lost to Anastasia Potapova. Ruse’s best result of the campaign was her run to the semi-finals of the Bad Homburg Open as a qualifier back in June.
Eala has become incredibly consistent over the past few weeks, and she will have appreciated a few days off between these two WTA 1000 events. She is the clear favourite to win.
