Alexander Zverev made a steady start at the Canadian Open as he defeated Adam Walton in straight sets. The first set went on serve, with the German edging a tight tiebreak 8-6. He broke the Australian’s serve for the first time in the sixth service game of the second set but failed to serve the match out at 5-3 up. Nevertheless, the three-time Grand Slam finalist broke again to seal a third-round spot.
He will face Matteo Arnaldi after the Italian beat Tristan Schoolkate 6-3 3-6 6-3. Schoolkate had beaten Joao Fonseca in the previous round after a strong serving display, but he was unable to replicate it here, with Arnaldi breaking serve on three separate occasions and dominating the decider.
Zverev leads 1-0 in the head-to-head, coming from a set down to defeat the Italian in the first-round of the Mexican Open in February. The German will have benefitted from having a match under his belt after some time away from the circuit and is a clear favourite to win comfortably.
