2020 finalist Alexander Zverev bean his campaign in New York with a comfortable straight sets win over Alejandro Tabilo in the first-round. The German was not broken on serve but was still taken to a tiebreak in set two, winning 6-2 7-6 6-4 after two hours and eight minutes.
He now plays Great Britain’s Jacob Fearnley in round two. Despite Fearnley’s poor form heading into the slam, he defeated Roberto Bautista Agut in four sets. He served for the match at 5-4 in the third, but the Spaniard reeled off three straight games to take the match into a fourth set. Fearnley wrestled back the momentum to win 7-5 6-2 5-7 6-4.
Even though Fearnley won, he still struggled with his service games, committing 16 faults and having a first serve percentage that was under 50% for the first three sets. Zverev has already won their two previous meetings this year at the Australian Open and Miami Open without the drop of a set.
The world number three possesses the more powerful and solid game, and will capitalise on any Fearnley errors on serve. He is strong value to advance comfortably.
