Alexander Zverev vs Francisco Cerundolo prediction
Alexander Zverev dropped his first set of the tournament but still made it through to the round-of-16 with a win over Matteo Arnaldi. The German’s level dipped at vital moments of the first set, but he lost just four points behind his first serve in the next two to win 6-7 6-3 6-2. That was his 500th tour-level match win.
He will now face Francisco Cerundolo as he beat countryman Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets. These two have had close battles in the past but this was a more straight-forward affair, with Cerundolo grabbing a crucial break in the ninth service game of the second set to win 6-3 6-4.
Despite Zverev’s greater pedigree, he trails Cerundolo 3-0 in the head-to-head and has lost to him twice already this season. However, all three matches were played on clay, Cerundolo’s most favoured surface.
Cerundolo is still an accomplished hard court player, shown by his quarter-final finishes in both Sunshine Double events this year. Nevertheless, Zverev should have enough to register a first win against the Argentinian.
