Alexander Shevchenko vs Gael Monfils prediction

Gael Monfils arrives in Chengdu hoping to arrest a shocking slide that has seen the veteran drop out of the world’s top 50.

The 39-year-old opened 2025 with a title in Auckland but his form has deteriorated with just three wins from his last 11 outings, including a four-match losing run.

The maverick Frenchman won’t have it any easier against Alexander Shevchenko, who has nudged back inside the top 100 as a result of a run to the final in a Challenger in Sumter.

The Kazakhstani also won his singles in a recent Davis Cup tie and has a win over Monfils under his belt following a 6-4 6-7 6-3 success at a hardcourt Challenger in Phoenix in their only previous encounter.

This will depend on Monfils’ motivation and his desire to match moments of magic with much-needed consistency.

Shevchenko will do that and should at least force a decider, but a punt on the lower-ranked player may well be worth it.
