Alexander Shevchenko advanced to the next round of his home event after battling past Laslo Djere. Shevchenko took the first set on a tiebreak and after exchanging breaks in the second, saved two set points in another lengthy breaker to advance. He won the second set tiebreak 14-12 to wrap up a 7-6 (1) 7-6 (12) victory after two hours and six minutes.
He will go up against Corentin Moutet after the Frenchman got past Bernard Tomic in round one. The Frenchman dominated the encounter in the first set, but Tomic grew into the match in the second, even having two set points in the tiebreak, but Moutet saved both and sealed victory. It was a 6-1 7-6 win in his favour.
Moutet has won all three of their previous encounters. His tactical creativity and left-handed serve makes him a dangerous opponent indoors and he will be the favourite to advance.
