Alexander Shevchenko reached a final on the Challenger Tour in Sumter last week, though he was forced to retire midway through his match with Mattia Bellucci. Shevchenko was trailing 7-6 3-1. That was a step in the right direction for the world number 89 after failing to qualify for the Cincinnati Open.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was just a point away from his first title on the ATP Tour last month but agonisingly fell short in the final of the Washington Open against Alex de Minaur. The number of matches seemed to take their toll on the Spaniard as he won two more matches to get through to the round-of-16 in Toronto before retiring from his encounter against Andrey Rublev. He was forced to do the same in round two of Cincinnati against Joao Fonseca.
Davidovich Fokina has had about 10 days or so to rest and prepare for this major. He's played some fine stuff during this hard court swing and we think he’ll comfortably book his place in the second-round.
