Alexander Bublik continued his winning run as he got his US Open campaign off and running with an impressive victory over 2014 champion Marin Cilic in straight sets. The Kazakhstani had not featured on the tour since his back-to-back title wins in Gstaad and Kitzbuhel a month ago but produced yet another strong serving performance to win 6-4 6-1 6-4. Bublik won an incredible 95% of his first serve points and is unbeaten in his last nine matches.
Tristain Schoolkate pulled off a surprise in round one as he held off a Lorenzo Sonego fightback to win a thrilling first-round match at Flushing Meadows. The Australian saved three set points in the second set tiebreak to go two sets up, but Sonego fought back to force a decider. Both exchanged breaks, but it was Schoolkate who raced ahead in the last set tiebreak, winning four of the last five points to win an enthralling encounter 6-3 7-6 1-6 1-6 7-6.
Schoolkate will be full of confidence after such a fine victory, but Bublik made the transition back to hard courts look seamless in round one and is viewed as one of the strongest servers on tour. His powerful game makes him a commanding favourite to win.
