Alexander Bublik did not compete in Toronto or Cincinnati and has not featured in a hard court tournament in the lead up to this US Open. Nevertheless, his last tournament was a success, as he picked up his third event victory of the year in Kitzbuhel without the drop of a set. That was his second title in a row after winning the Gstaad Open a week earlier. Bublik’s has reached the quarter-final of a Grand Slam for the first time and picked up three title wins in the space of less than three months.
Marin Cilic has not played since Wimbledon. It was a return to form for the veteran as he produced his best showing at SW19 since reaching the final in 2017. A superb performance in round two saw him defeat home favourite and fourth seed Jack Draper, with the Briton stunned by the brutal hitting on show from Cilic. He now returns to the venue of his greatest triumph, 11 years on from his straight sets victory against Kei Nishikori to win his first and only Grand Slam.
This is an intriguing encounter, with both lacking match sharpness after some time away from the court. A well-rested Cilic could be a tough opponent for Bublik considering the quality of his groundstrokes, but the Kazakhstani should still be able to outlast the Croatian and get through.
