Alexander Bublik ended a three-match losing run in his opening match at the Shanghai Masters after beating 2024 semi-finalist Tomas Machac. The 29-year-old conceded just the one break point opportunity and hammered 18 aces in total, winning 6-4 7-6 (4) after one hour and 23 minutes. This was Bublik’s first victory at the tournament since 2019. He won a tour-level title right at the start of the year at the Hong Kong Open.

He now plays Brandon Nakashima. The American defeated Matteo Berrettini in the previous stage of the tournament. Nakashima was not broken on serve and edged ahead at the end of both sets to win 7-6 (4) 7-5. The 25-year-old advanced to his first Masters 1000 final at the Canadian Open earlier this year.

Both players are likely to dominate their service games on this fast surface, and this match could involve at least one tiebreak.
