Alex Molcan impressed at the China Open last time out, as he qualified for the main draw after wins over Vit Kopriva and Marco Trungelliti. He then got past Tomas Machac in the first-round, before losing to Karen Khachanov. Molcan has reached two ATP semi-finals in Munch and Umag this season, along with a final on the Challenger Tour in Prostejov. 

He takes on Federico Cina in round one of the Shanghai Masters. Cina enters the main draw as a qualifier. The teenager won a Challenger event in Pune this year, though he has only one tour-level victory in 2026. That occurred just last week at the Chengdu Open, after a win over Camilo Ugo Carabelli, despite only entering the main draw as a lucky loser. 

Molcan has been the tougher player to face on the ATP Tour this season, despite his modest record on hard courts in 2026. He also has greater experience in comparison to his opponent, and will start as the favourite.
