Alex Michelsen recovered from a set down to beat fifth seed Francisco Cerundolo and book his place in the next round of Halle. He won 2-6 7-5 6-4, grabbing the crucial break in the middle of the deciding set.
He now takes on Stefanos Tsitsipas in the round-of-16. The Greek made a winning start under new coach Goran Ivanisevic but was made to work for his victory over Luciano Darderi. Tsitsipas got off to a solid enough start and took the first set, but he allowed the Italian back into the contest in set two. Darderi had five break points in the last set but couldn’t convert any of them, with Tsitsipas managing to win the match on a deciding tiebreak.
It wasn’t the most convincing of matches for the two-time Grand Slam finalist to start his grass court season and he also needed treatment for a back injury during the contest. Michelsen has won their two previous encounters, including a first-round match at the Australian Open earlier this year. This is a wonderful opportunity for the American to reach the quarter-finals.
