Alex Michelsen began his season on the clay with a run to the semi-finals of the Houston Open where he lost in straight sets to Frances Tiafoe. He then suffered a disappointing first-round loss in Madrid to Alexander Bublik before dropping down to play on the Challenger Tour. The American did not drop a set as he won in Estoril, which is his first ever title on clay. The youngster has not been able to maintain that form as he’s suffered consecutive first-round losses in Rome and Geneva.
Juan Manuel Cerundolo won all three of his main qualifying rounds to make the main draw at Roland Garros for the very first time. The Argentine’s best performance all season saw him reach the semi-finals of a Challenger in Cordoba.
Michelsen has more weapons to his game, including his big serve and fluid forehand, and is ranked far higher than Cerundolo, who is outside the top 100. Despite his poor showing in his most recent two tournaments, the American has a title to his name on the surface and should be making it through.
