Alex de Minaur came from a set down to battle his way past Botic van de Zandschulp and seal his place in the semi-finals of the Rotterdam Open for a third year in a row. De Minaur had enjoyed two comfortable victories in the previous rounds, but he was seriously tested by Van de Zandschulp. He went a set down and crucially saved three break points at 3-3 in the second as he went on to draw level. The Dutchman broke at the start of the decider and went 2-0 up, but De Minaur broke back and eventually sealed a 3-6 7-6 (4) 7-5 win.
He goes up against Ugo Humbert next. The Frenchman got through to his second semi-final of the season after beating Christopher O’Connell in straight sets. He won 96% of his first serve points and did not concede a break point as he won 6-4 6-1.
De Minaur leads the head-to-head 5-2 but it’s 1-1 indoors. Humbert has a strong record in these conditions but De Minaur’s consistency in rallies should allow him to neutralise the Frenchman’s aggression, especially as the match wears on. He enjoys these slower indoor courts, and he will be the favourite to make a third final in succession here.
