Alex de Minaur booked his place in the next round of the Shanghai Masters after a straight sets win over Rei Sakamoto. The Australian was forced to retire in the final of the China Open against Novak Djokovic last week due to an adductor issue, but he seemed to be moving well here as he wrapped up a 7-6 (6) 6-4 victory. De Minaur’s form has improved since the US Open, with seven victories from his last eight matches in total.

He now plays Karen Khachanov. The 30-year-old remains unbeaten against Adrian Mannarino after a win over the veteran in the previous stage of the event. Khachanov was always in control, conceding just the one break point on his way to a 6-2 6-4 victory.

The head-to-head is locked at 2-2, with De Minaur winning their last match in Vienna last year. Both of these players have found form recently, but De Minaur’s consistency may just prove too much for Khachanov in this one.
