Alex de Minaur began the defence of his title with a three set win over former world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first-round of the Washington Open. The Greek had won 12 of their 13 meetings on the ATP Tour before this contest, but De Minaur found his form in the deciding set to win 6-4 3-6 6-3. The Australian saved match points against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in last year’s final.
He will now face compatriot Cruz Hewitt for a place in the last eight. Hewitt, the son of two-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one Lleyton, was largely in control as he beat his first-round opponent Marcos Giron in straight sets. The 17-year-old did not even concede a break point on serve as he won 6-3 6-4.
De Minaur is the defending champion at this event, and he will be expected to come out on top in this match.
