Aleksandar Vukic’s home slam was short-lived in nature as he was defeated by Thiago Agustin Tirante in straight sets. This first-round defeat was a blow for Vukic, who had shown some promising form by making it through to the semi-finals of the Adelaide International as a qualifier. He has dropped down to 91 in the world rankings.
Stan Wawrinka, by contrast, rolled back the years with two victories on his final Australian Open appearance to make the third-round. He then picked up a victory in round one of the Open Occitanie in Montpellier, beating Hamad Medjedovic in straight sets. He pushed top seed and defending champion Felix Auger-Aliassime in the next stage but fell to a defeat.
Wawrinka leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a three set win over Vukic in the first-round of Indian Wells three years ago. The 40-year-old is still very competitive and can pull off a victory here.
