Aleksandar Vukic was handed a second-round berth in Shanghai after Stefanos Tsitsipas’ withdrawal, but the lucky loser still lost to Nuno Borges in straight sets. Nevertheless, he performed well in Tokyo as the qualifier made it all the way to the last eight before he was defeated by Casper Ruud. The Australian won four matches in a row and it was his best result on the ATP Tour this season.
Marko Topo will make his first ATP main draw appearance this season after winning both of his matches in qualifying. The world number 277 attempted to do the same in Hamburg but could not qualify on that occasion. He mainly competes on the ITF circuit and does have two title wins, while he also made the semi-finals in Heilbronn on the Challenger Tour.
Vukic is the clear favourite and does have some momentum on his side after the run in Tokyo.
