Alejandro Tabilo produced an upset in the previous round as he defeated third seed and defending champion Joao Fonseca in three sets. Tabilo made a fast start and raced into a 3-0 lead at the beginning of the match. Though he was broken back, he responded magnificent be breaking for a second time in the next service game as he took the first set. Fonseca fought back in the second and both players exchanged breaks at the start of the decider. The crucial moment came in the 12th game as Tabilo broke when Fonseca was serving to stay in the match, winning 6-3 3-6 7-5.
He will face Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the quarter-finals. Etcheverry got past compatriot Roman Andres Burruchaga in a three set battle to get through to the last eight. Etcheverry was 5-3 down but broke when Burruchaga was serving for the first set, going on to edge in front after the tiebreak. Burruchaga levelled the match in the second but ran out of steam at the end as Etcheverry sealed a 7-6 (5) 6-7 (3) 6-4 win after three hours and 37 minutes.
Etcheverry is a slight favourite and will have home support behind him, but Tabilo is a threat on this surface and performed strongly against Fonseca.
