Alejandro Tabilo held off a fightback from Thiago Agustin Tirante to advance to the semi-finals of the Rio Open. The Chilean took the first set and broke at the start of the second as he went on to serve for the match. However, Tirante broke back and also saved a match point in the tiebreak as he forced a third set. Tabilo reasserted his authority with a dominant decider to win 7-6 (2) 6-7 (6) 6-1.
He will now face Ignacio Buse for a place in the final. The Peruvian defeated home favourite Joao Fonseca in the round-of-16 and continued his fine run as he beat 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in the last eight. He won 6-3 2-6 6-3.
This is their first match on a clay court, but Tabilo has won their two previous meetings. The Chilean’s aggression will be needed from the start here, but he has enough quality to make it through.
