Alejandro Davidovich Fokina vs Valentin Royer prediction

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina advanced to his fourth final of the year in Basel last week but his wait for a maiden ATP title goes on as he was beaten in straight sets by Joao Fonseca. Despite that disappointment, the Spaniard should take encouragement from a fine year, which has seen him motor up the rankings and reach a new high of 15 in the world.

He faces Valentin Royer, who enters the tournament as a lucky loser after last year’s finalist Ugo Humbert had to withdraw. Royer reached his first ATP final in Hangzhou last month, losing to Alexander Bublik in the final. He also qualified for Shanghai and Basel, making the second-round in each event. He was unable to do the same for this tournament after losing to Sebastian Korda in the second stage of qualifying following a tight three set match, but Humbert’s injury provides him with a route to the main draw.

Davidovich Fokina may be slightly fatigued from his exploits in Basel, but he should still have enough quality to defeat Royer in round one.
