Alejandro Davidovich Fokina’s form has dipped somewhat after some strong results in the middle part of the summer swing in North America. This included a round-of-16 appearance at the Canadian Open and a final in Washington, where had match points to win. His recent form has seen him lose in the second-round of the US Open and begin his Asian swing with another round two defeat to Daniil Medvedev at the China Open.
Matteo Arnaldi got a much-needed victory in round one as he defeated Rei Sakamoto. It still wasn’t all plain sailing for the Italian, as he was broken when serving for the first set and relinquished his advantage in the second after going a break up once more. He steadied himself to win 7-6 6-4. Arnaldi had lost six of his previous seven matches before his first-round match.
He will also take confidence from the head-to-head, as the Italian leads 2-1. They’ve played each other on two occasions this year, with Arnaldi winning the first encounter in Dallas and Davidovich Fokina coming out on top in the semi-finals of the Delray Beach Open. The Spaniard has shown strong enough results on hard courts this year to suggest that he will be a huge favourite to get through.
