The Frenchman was struggling for results before the Open Occitanie last week, but made a surprise run to the final, losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime. Mannarino was never in trouble here as he broke Walton’s serve five times on his way to a 6-4 6-2 win after one hour and 24 minutes.
He takes on second seed Ben Shelton next. He got his campaign up and running with a straight sets win over Gabriel Diallo. Shelton broke at the start of both sets and saved all three break points he offered up as he won 6-4 6-4.
Mannarino holds the edge in the head-to-head as he leads 3-1. Their last match was at the US Open, with Shelton being forced to retire at two sets all.
