Adrian Mannarino vs Ben Shelton prediction

Adrian Mannarino produced a fine display in round one as he beat Marcos Giron 6-4 6-4. The Frenchman faced just one break point during the whole match and won an overwhelming 91% of his points on first serve. This was his first ATP Tour victory on a hard court this season.

He now takes on Ben Shelton, who arrives in Toronto as the fourth seed. Shelton reached his second successive semi-final at the Washington Open last week but failed to get past that stage once again as he fell to a 6-2 7-5 defeat to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Nevertheless, it was still a solid start for the American to begin the summer hard court swing after his best run at Wimbledon where he made the quarter-finals for the first time.

Though there is a huge disparity in terms of their ranking, Mannarino does lead the head-to-head 2-0. He beat Shelton in Miami two years ago and came from two sets to one down to defeat the American in the third-round of last year’s Australian Open. Mannarino’s form and ranking has dropped sharply since that victory and Shelton will be a big favourite to finally notch a win against him.
