WHO ARE THE LEADING MEDAL CONTENDERS?

This race will include the 2016 Olympic gold medalist and the 2020 Track Cycling World Championships gold medalist. As well as that, the world number one and world number two according to the UCI Men’s Elite Omnium world rankings.

It is a stacked field in which a clear standout is unknown but the names of the above are as follows: Elia Viviani of Italy, Benjamin Thomas of France, Eiya Hashimoto of Japan and Yauheni Karaliok of Belarus. That quartet will be in the hunt for the podium.

WHO COULD CAUSE A SURPRISE?

It wouldn’t necessarily be a huge surprise for Matthew Walls and Jan-Willem van Schip to take the gold medal but they are two cyclists outside of the aforementioned four that will come into this as legitimate contenders. Walls managed bronze in the 2020 world championships with Van Schip earning himself a silver.

TSZ’S PREDICTION

Benjamin Thomas comes into this as the relatively heavy favourite. The Frenchman won the 2020 World Championships and despite not yet breaking into the top three in the world rankings, he is expected to make it a double and win his first Olympic medal.
