Andre de Grasse set a new national Canadian record of 19.73 seconds in the semi-finals of this competition as he looks to add to his bronze medal from the 100 metres on Sunday afternoon. His compatriot, Aaron Brown, also broke the 20 second mark in the second semi-final.
Other competitors in the race will be Joseph Fahnbulleh of Liberia as well as Kenneth Bednarek of the United States. Those two were the only other two to qualify for the final while breaking the 20-second mark.

Andre de Grasse looks set to be the fairly heavy favourite for this race with his impressive semi-final performance adding to that case. The Canadian sprinter has yet to win an Olympic gold after picking up a silver and two bronze in Rio before his aforementioned third-place finish in the 100m in Tokyo. That looks set to change this time.
